About the Program

What is Growing for Gold?

Growing for Gold encourages local young people aged 3-16 to participate in sporting and recreational activities within our community. The program runs during the October school holidays and local sport and recreation providers are invited to open their doors to promote their club activities FREE of charge to participants.

What's in it for the participant?

An incentive scheme built into the event encourages young people to try different activities and, most importantly, to take the next step of joining a club of their choice.

If a young person joins a participating club within a set period of the program ending, irrespective of the number of activities, a Gold Certificate, a $50 Intersport voucher, and a family pass for SHANX Mini Golf and Waterworld Aquatic Centre are awarded!

The History

Growing for Gold has been running across the City of Salisbury since 1999. An exciting new partnership was established in 2017 for the program with neighbouring Port Adelaide Enfield and Playford Councils, and City of Tea Tree Gully in 2024. This program is essential to the sporting sectors of communities as it has the ability to broaden and increase audiences; this cross-council collaboration will assist in strengthening efforts to facilitate growth and future opportunities to increase community participation and active participation in sport and recreation.

The program has been very successful over the years, attracting close to 3,000 young people each year. Approximately 20% of participants have been successful in joining a club, with around 50 clubs participating each year.

For many clubs this is a great opportunity to promote their club and to provide participants with a fun and enjoyable experience that encourages them to come back.
